Accommodations for Hunter High School Test | What You Need to Know

If students want to join the community at Hunter College High School in 7th grade, they must achieve top scores on Hunter’s entrance exam. This three hour test, covering a writing assignment, math problems, and critical reading can be daunting to any test-taker, including students with disabilities. The administrators at Hunter welcome all students who qualify to take the entrance exam, and Hunter provides accommodations both for the exam itself and over the six year students spend at Hunter.

What Accommodations are Available for the Hunter Admissions Test?

Before students take the Hunter test, they must first show that they’re qualified to sit for the admissions test. This means beating Hunter’s cutoff scores for math and ELA state tests at the end of 5th grade, or showing a 90th percentile rank on an equivalent exam. These rules still apply for students with accommodations, but they need to take an extra step before sitting for the exam. In September, students need to fill out the application to take the Hunter test, and this is where students with accommodations provide evidence of their documented disabilities and the accommodations they have at their current schools. Based on this information, Hunter will provide similar accommodations during the entrance exam.

What Support Does Hunter Provide to Students?

Hunter operates in accordance with Section 504, which means that it will not deny benefits or discriminate against any student with a disability. This also means that Hunter will provide appropriate education and accommodations for these students, and these accommodations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Once a student is admitted to Hunter, any IEP or previous 504 plan associated with that student should be sent to Hunter. This way, the school can plan the best ways to help educate that particular student. In addition to typical accommodations provided by high schools, Hunter can also bring in special education support teachers to work with students on an as-needed basis. Essentially, students with disabilities will be treated as well as Hunter as they would be at any other public or private NYC school.
