Regis High School NYC Admissions | School Overview
Regis is just over a hundred years old and serves Catholic male students across the New York area, with approximately 130 students in each grade. The school itself is committed to academic excellence under a liberal arts program, instilling a love of service, and strengthening spiritual beliefs among its young men.
During the years students spend Regis, they will take four years of English and theology; three years of social studies, foreign language, math, science, and arts; one year of speech and writing; and nearly a full year of elective courses. Foreign language options include Chinese, German, Latin, and Spanish, and electives options range from typical higher-level courses in each major subject to more specialized courses such as Yoga & Meditation, Financial Accounting, Peace Studies, and more.
Outside the classroom, students can participate in social justice seminars and volunteer work, speech and debate team, athletics, and more. Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of programs outside the classroom, and this focus on overall performance has helped Regis gain its reputation as one of the top private schools in the US.

Regis School NYC | Admissions Information
Due to its free tuition and its great overall performance, Regis has a rigorous admissions process. The initial requirements are for students to be baptized Roman Catholics, achieve strong school performance, have two letters of recommendation, and reach at least the 90th percentile for ERBs or similar state exams.
If students qualify based on this criteria, they should either be nominated for admission online (Catholic middle schools) or directly contact the Regis Admissions Office (public and independent schools).
All applicants who meet this criteria will take the High School Placement Test (“HSPT”), which is used as the Regis entrance exam in November. All testing takes place at the Regis school for NYC residents.
The top 230 students based on grades and HSPT performance will have two same-day in-person interviews at Regis. One interview will be with a current faculty member, and the second will take place with an alum of Regis.
Regis High School | Content of the HSPT
The HSPT contains five major sections and lasts for approximately three hours, depending on breaks. The sections are as follows:
Cognitive Skills
- Verbal Skills consists of 60 questions, covering synonyms, antonyms, verbal analogies, verbal classifications and logical reasoning. (18 minutes).
- Quantitative Skills consists of 52 questions, covering number series, number manipulations, and both geometric and nongeometric quantitative comparisons. (30 minutes)
Basic Skills
- Reading consists of 62 questions, covering the ability to remember important ideas and significant details, recognizing central thought or purpose, making logical inferences and understanding vocabulary in context. (25 minutes).
- Mathematics consists of 64 questions, covering computation, problem solving, important math concepts and reasoning. (45 minutes).
- Language consists of 60 questions, covering punctuation, capitalization, spelling, grammar, usage and composition. (25 minutes).
Regis High School | How to Prepare for the HSPT
Top performance on the HSPT will be essential to make the semifinalist round and ace the admissions interviews.
Students should be used to the test content from their classwork through eighth grade and state exam requirements, but now is the time to brush up on any areas of weakness. Self-study with the HSPT sample tests can be a good fit for some students, while other students may want to consider additional work in areas that they find challenging. Regardless, getting through several practice tests can make the test day a little less stressful.
